From my earliest memories to today, my interest in and enjoyment of color has remained steadfast. I have been drawing and contemplating color for as long as I can remember. I graduated from SMU in Dallas, TX with a BBA. Thirty years ago, I began my art education with Drawing, Watercolor and Oil Painting, studying under several prominent artists throughout the past 3 decades and also pouring over well recommended art books. I have loved the journey. I both lose and find myself when I am creating art and the hours fly. I feel grateful to be a working artist!
The way I feel toward a subject will oftentimes dictate whether I paint in watercolor or oil. I enjoy watercolor for its freshness. It is exciting, alive and fast paced. When I paint in oil, I fall in love with the medium and it feels tender because I paint in layers and take my time to enjoy the distant layers shining through to the surface.
I love the way light dances across a form, the interplay between light and shadow, the power of contrast and color and I use these elements in my paintings. When I see something I would like to paint, I feel swept away by the beauty or essence of it. The subjects that captivate me are intriguing landscapes, the sky, vibrant in all its glory, the lake when it looks like it is sparkling with diamonds because of the sun’s reflection and personality plus animals. I am drawn to these things and feel a desire to capture them in an artistic way in my paintings. My fascination also belongs to nostalgic moments, sweet and vulnerable expressions of humanity and heart stirrings of family life. I paint to feel a connection to what has moved me, to see if I can use watercolors or oils in rich colors along with contrast and light to recreate it in a meaningful way.
I hope that when others view my art, it causes them to pause with a glimpse into one of their own memories or offers a stir of nostalgia or happiness. When they look at a landscape, I hope they are drawn in to explore. I hope my paintings spark the viewer’s imagination and bring them joy.
